Passive Voice

Subject receives the action

Structure: Subject + be + past participle (+ by + agent)

e.g., The canal was built by engineers.

6. Write an article (180–200 words) describing one full day as a tourist guide in Egypt.

Use at least 5 active sentences and 5 passive sentences. Describe what you do (active) and what happens to the tourists (passive). Try to connect your sentences with linking words (first, then, after that, finally).

When to Use Passive Voice — Ministry book p. 113

  1. Unknown agent: The pyramid was constructed thousands of years ago.
  2. Unimportant agent: Cotton is grown in the Nile Delta.
  3. Obvious agent: The criminal was arrested. (by the police – obvious)
  4. Formal/Scientific writing: The experiment was conducted carefully.

Grammar Summary

  • Use active voice when the subject is important or performs the action
  • Use passive voice when the receiver of the action is more important than the doer
  • Passive voice is common in formal, academic, and scientific writing
  • The agent (by + noun) can be omitted when unknown, unimportant, or obvious
