- Unknown agent: The pyramid was constructed thousands of years ago.
- Unimportant agent: Cotton is grown in the Nile Delta.
- Obvious agent: The criminal was arrested. (by the police – obvious)
- Formal/Scientific writing: The experiment was conducted carefully.
Grammar Summary
- Use active voice when the subject is important or performs the action
- Use passive voice when the receiver of the action is more important than the doer
- Passive voice is common in formal, academic, and scientific writing
- The agent (by + noun) can be omitted when unknown, unimportant, or obvious
