Language in Use — Tag Questions

A tag question is a short phrase at the end of a statement. Positive statement → negative tag. Negative statement → positive tag.

You look over the moon, don't you? · Mariam hasn't gone shopping, has she? · They should do their best, shouldn't they?

With none of, nobody, nothing, hardly, ever → affirmative tag: Babies can hardly depend on themselves, can they?

Intonation: Falling = sure statement is true · Rising = real question

Tag question rules OCR: A tag question is a short phrase at the end of a statement that changes it into a question. A positive statement has a negative tag and a negative statement has a positive tag. We make tag questions with auxiliaries, e.g. do, be, have or a modal. Examples: You look over the moon, don't you? · Mariam hasn't gone shopping, has she? · They should do their best, shouldn't they? Tag questions are affirmative with none of, nobody, nothing, hardly, and ever. Example: Babies can hardly depend on themselves, can they? When the speaker is sure that the statement is true, the intonation falls down. When the speaker is asking a real question, the intonation rises.

Complete tag answers: 1. didn't they? 2. can't you? 3. will she? 4. haven't we? 5. isn't he? 6. am I? 7. was it? 8. have you? · Mistakes: 1. isn't she? 2. do they? 3. can't he? 4. aren't we? 5. did you?

How does the media affect the way people think and make decisions? Media outlets often choose which stories to show — not all channels report the same facts in the same way. A cropped photo can make someone look guilty. Emotional language affects how people feel about news stories. Tag questions encourage the listener to think and agree. We should think critically about what we read and watch — not never trust any source, but verify before sharing.
