Language in Use — Relative Clauses

Defining relative clauses

  • Give necessary information about a person or object
  • Use who, whom, which, that (can replace who/which with that)
  • Can omit pronoun if it defines the object

e.g. Ahmed is the student who/that got full marks. · Dogs are animals which/that are loyal. · We must protect the glory (that) we inherited.

Non-defining relative clauses

  • Give extra information — not essential
  • Cannot use that · must keep pronoun · use commas

e.g. Sama's grandfather, who lives in Assuit, has one daughter. · The new building, which is solar-powered, opened last October. · Yara, whose father was a teacher, is a clever doctor.
