How to Write a Mystery Story — Ministry book

A mystery story is a short tale about a puzzle or crime that needs to be solved—like a missing object, a secret message, or a strange event. The main character (the detective) follows clues to find the answer.

✍️
How to Write a Mystery Story
Activity 1
Activity 1: Create a Mystery Box

Draw a box and write.

  • A mystery (e.g., The school clock stopped / A student's lunchbox has been stolen)
  • 3 clues (e.g., oil on the floor, a tool nearby, a student seen near the clock)
  • 1 misleading clue (e.g., the clock stopped at 3:00—same time as lunch!)
Activity 2
Activity 2: Who's the Detective?

Answer these questions.

1 What's your detective's name?

2 Are they brave, smart, or funny?

Writing Tip — Ministry book

Steps to Write a Mystery

  1. Think of a Mystery — Start with a question: Who took the cookies? Why did the lights go out? Where did the secret map come from? Tip: Keep it simple and fun!
  2. Create a Detective — This is the person who solves the mystery. It could be: a student · a pet · a robot · or even a talking cat! Give your detective a name and a special skill (like noticing small details).
  3. Add Clues and Red Herrings — Clues help solve the mystery (e.g., a muddy footprint, a note). Red Herrings are fake clues that confuse the detective (e.g., a suspect who looks guilty but didn't do it). Use 2–3 real clues and 1 red herring.
  4. Solve the Mystery — At the end, the detective puts the clues together and reveals the truth. Make sure the answer makes sense and fits the clues!
📖
Activity 4: Finish the Story
Activity 4
Read this start and write the ending.

Paintbrush mystery — story start

"During art class, the teacher's favorite paintbrush went missing. Only three students stayed late: Mai, Maha, and Manar. The brush was found under a chair, still wet with blue paint. But no one was using blue… Who took it?"

Now write:

What really happened?

How did the detective solve it?
