What is a question tag?
A question tag is a short question that we add to the end of a sentence. We use it when we want to:
- Check information: You're Egyptian, aren't you?
- Ask for agreement: This movie is great, isn't it?
It makes the sentence sound more interactive and friendly.
8 rules — Ministry book
- Positive sentence → Negative tag: You are a student, aren't you? · He can swim, can't he?
- Negative sentence → Positive tag: She isn't here, is she? · They don't eat meat, do they?
- Use the same auxiliary verb: He is a teacher, isn't he?
- No auxiliary → use do/does/did: You like football, don't you? · He went to Cairo, didn't he?
- With "I am" → use "aren't I": I'm late, aren't I?
- With "everyone" → singular verb, plural pronoun: Everyone knows the answer, don't they?
- With Let's → "shall we?": Let's go out, shall we?
- Imperative → "will you?" / "won't you?": Clean your room, will you? · Don't go, will you?
