Language in Context — Reported Questions

Reported Questions — Ministry book p. 88

When we tell someone about a question another person asked, we use reported questions. We don't use the exact words, but we report what was asked. We usually use words like asked, wondered, inquired.

Basic Rules:

  1. Change the word order — No inversion (subject before verb)
  2. Change the tense — Usually one step back in time
  3. Use connecting words: if/whether (Yes/No) · what, where, when, why, how (Wh-)
  4. No question marks — Reported questions are statements
Yes/No: Direct: Do you want to hang out? → Reported: She asked if/whether I wanted to hang out.
Wh-: Direct: Where did you stay? → Reported: He asked where I had stayed.
Model: "Will you come to the party?", she asked. → She asked if I would come to the party.

Work in pairs. Change these direct questions into reported questions.

1 "Will you come to the party?", she asked. → She asked if I would come to the party.

2 "Have you been to that new restaurant?", he asked.

3 "Did you enjoy the movie last night?", dad asked.

4 "Why can't you come to the party?", she asked.

5 "How long will you be in town?", he asked.

6 "When are you free next week?", my friend asked.

Find mistakes
Find and correct the mistakes in these reported questions:

Complete these dialogs using reported questions.
