Global sea level rise — Ministry book

Scientific data indicate that global sea level in 2016 was approximately 82 mm higher than the 1983 average. Projections suggest a potential rise of 0.2 to 2 meters by 2100. This trend is accompanied by a documented increase in the frequency of coastal flooding in numerous regions compared to mid-20th-century levels.

The phenomenon is primarily driven by two connected mechanisms: (1) The accelerated melting of glaciers and ice sheets due to rising global temperatures, which has become the dominant contributor to sea level rise over the past decade. (2) Thermal expansion of seawater as ocean temperatures increase. These processes are expected to intensify under current climate change scenarios.

The implications are severe, with an estimated 275 million people currently residing in low-lying coastal zones exposed to floods. Notably, the majority of the world's megacities are situated in coastal areas, including several major European urban centers facing significant flood risks. Climate migration models predict large population shift in coming decades.

While international climate agreements aim to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, their potential to slow sea level rise remains uncertain. Consequently, adaptation strategies are becoming increasingly critical. Innovative engineering solutions, such as amphibious architecture and large-scale coastal defense systems, are being implemented in flood-prone regions. These measures demonstrate the growing recognition that both modification and adaptation will be essential to address this pressing global challenge.
